Nilsa Urquia – Missing in Argentina
Nilsa Urquia
Nilsa Urquía was a lawyer that represented political prisoners and wrote habeas corpus for disappeared persons. She belonged to the Bar Association. She was killed along with her colleague Marta Zamaro, kidnapped and tortured. Her body was found in the Cululú, stream in a shallow grave near Santa Fe. The body was destroyed by torture.
Nilsa was born in Ordoñez, province of Córdoba. She was 31 years old. Her family was owner of the General Daheza Aceitera.
She studied advocacy at the National University of Santa Fé in 1965.
Nilsa knew she was in danger. She tried to obtain a passport to go to Mexico, but failed.
Although the assassination of the two lawyers impacted the society of Santa Fe, a criminal case file was opened - it was left in a drawer and their killers remain in impunity.
Today a cultural centre carries her name and Marta. The novel "Los Jackals del Arroyo", was published in 1993 by Carlos María Gómez, concerning the disappearance of Nilsa and Marta. The book was reprinted in 2007 by the UNL.
